Tilley wins Big Bass Tour

Rick Tilley, Jr. (right) was the winner of the 2019 Bass Pro Shops/Cabela’s Big Bass Tournament at Smith Mountain Lake held at Crazy Horse Marina over the weekend. Tilley, pictured with his father and fishing partner, won a 2019 Nitro Z19 bass boat with all the bells and whistles for his effort.

A secret spot on the Lake and a $4.99 lure proved to be the perfect combination to win the 2019 Bass Pro Shops/Cabela’s Big Bass Tour at Smith Mountain Lake last weekend at Crazy Horse Marina.

Moneta angler Rick Tilley, Jr. caught a 6.67-pound bass in a special fishing spot just a few minutes into the first hour of the first day of the three-day tournament that stayed atop of the leaderboard for the entire weekend. The fish earned him a 2019 Niro Z19 Bass boat rigged with a Mercury 200 L Pro XS Fourstroke outboard, MinnKota Ultrex rolling motor, Hummingbird Helix series fish finders, and Nitro trailer with a powder coat finish.

“I had taken my nine year-old son who has never been nighttime fishing and he caught a five-pound fish in the exact same spot, this place…I know it very well… I’ve been fishing there for a long time,” he said. “We got there about 20 minutes early and when the bell went off, I made my first cast, sort a little short thing, and when I made my first really good cast down the bank, cranked the handle about six times and she ate it.”
