Service members from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center visited Smith Mountain Lake for a third consecutive year this past weekend. The lake community joined together once again to show these veterans a good time.

Good fishing and a supportive community have made Smith Mountain Lake an annual stop for veterans taking part in Freedom Alliance’s Support for Our Heroes program. The military support organization has hosted the event for the past three years. Freedom Alliance provides the trip as a way to thank members of the military who have recently served, especially those who have been injured in combat.

“This place is a perfect combination of beautiful outdoors and great patriotic people,” Freedom Alliance program officer Tim Strickler said. “And the guys keep raving about it.”
