After fire, delay, Portside Grill & Bar opens

The Portside Grill & Bar opened June 30.

A week into the newly reopened Portside Grill & Bar, and business has been “fantastic,” said Virginia Dare co-owner Darrin Main.

The Portside Grill & Bar, an eatery at the Virginia Dare Marina, opened last year in May, but a lack of kitchen facilities posed logistical concerns in 2019.

In February, a fire destroyed the Virginia Dare’s main marina building, which contained a commercial kitchen, office space, and with it, the Virginia Dare’s new Beacon Pub. The paddlewheel cruise boat, Portside Grill & Bar, and slips were not damaged. The cause of the blaze was undetermined, Bedford County Chief of Fire and Rescue Jack Jones said earlier this year.

The fire affected operations “a lot,” Virginia Dare co-owner Garrett Meyer said in May.
