Smith Mountain Project visitors center temporarily closed

The Smith Mountain Project visitors center is set to reopen Oct. 5.

The Smith Mountain Project visitors center and nearby observation area has closed temporarily to allow maintenance work on the site's access road.

The access road will be closed until Friday, Oct. 4. The center is expected to reopen Saturday, Oct. 5.

The Joseph H. Vipperman Visitors Center is located above the Smith Mountain Dam on the Bedford County side of the Smith Mountain gap. The center provides a free history and learning experience about the project.

A public picnic area just below the Smith Mountain Dam on Leesville Lake is not affected by the road closure and will remain open.
