A new animal shelter is on the horizon in Franklin County.

During its regular meeting Tuesday, the Franklin County Board of Supervisors approved entering into a contract with Frith Construction, of Martinsville, to build a new animal shelter. Frith Construction presented a low base bid of $1.3 million. County funds available for the project is roughly $1.8 million.

According to a meeting executive summary, the existing animal shelter near the county’s landfill on U.S. 220 has deficiencies that include poor ventilation, a lack of adequate animal quarantine areas and insufficient space for staff and volunteers.
