This tree was cleared from Scruggs Road near Westlake Baptist Church after a severe thunderstorm today.

A severe thunderstorm struck the Smith Mountain Lake area around 5:20 p.m. today, causing strong wind, heavy rain, hail and downed trees.

According to reports, one tree at 4300 Alean Road between Boones Mill and Burnt Chimney struck a utility line and caught it on fire.

Other trees reportedly blocked roads such as Route 116 and Scruggs Road near Westlake Baptist Church.

In addition, a two vehicle accident reportedly occurred at 450 Franklin St. in Rocky Mount, causing minor injuries.

At 4:39 p.m., the National Weather Service in Blacksburg had issued a severe thunderstorm warning until 5:45 p.m. for Southern Roanoke County, Northwestern Pittsylvania County Southern City of Roanoke, Southeastern Bedford County, Botetourt County and Franklin County.

The weather service reported a hazard of 60 mph wind gusts and half-dollar-size hail, with expected damage to vehicles, roofs, siding and trees affecting Bedford, Rocky Mount, Buchanan, Troutville and Boones Mill.
