A 6-year-old girl died and several others were injured after two vehicles collided head-on Thursday on Hendricks Store Road in Moneta.
According to the Virginia State Police, the incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. about one-fifth of a mile south of Timberwood Lane.
The 6-year-old girl and an 8-year-old girl were airlifted to a hospital Thursday in the incident that involved life-threatening injuries.
They were in a 2016 Honda CRV driven by Ashley Nicole Holdren, 34, of Moneta. Holdren allegedly was traveling southbound when she veered over the center line of the road and struck a 2004 Jeep Liberty head-on.
The jeep was driven by Cheryl Lynne Smith-Clifton, 60, of Moneta, Both drivers were wearing a seatbelt and were taken to the hospital with injuries.
The incident allegedly involved entrapment. The road was reportedly closed at Tuck Road, and traffic control was provided.
Virginia State Police Trooper T.J. Sica is investigating the incident, and charges are pending.
The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team was called to assist with the crash.
According to sources, organizations in the area that responded to the incident included Moneta Fire Department, Moneta Rescue Squad, Bedford County Fire & Rescue, Hardy Life Saving & Rescue and Saunders Volunteer Fire Company.
