Comcast, in partnership with Bedford County, Va., today announced the launch of its network expansion project to extend broadband service to more than 7,000 addresses in Smith Mountain Lake, Va. In addition to Gigabit Internet service, residents in Smith Mountain Lake will have access to all Xfinity services, including the award-winning Xfinity X1 video platform, Xfinity Home, Xfinity Voice and Xfinity Mobile, and businesses can get the full suite of Comcast Business products and services, including Ethernet network speeds up to 100 Gigabits-per-second. Comcast plans to begin rolling-out services to parts of the area this month with an expected completion of the project by year-end.

In 2018, the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission awarded Bedford County, in partnership with Comcast, a $3.5 million “Last Mile Broadband Program” grant to extend broadband service in the area around Smith Mountain Lake. The “Last Mile Broadband Program” grant provides funding for up to 50 percent of the construction for communities partnering with private sector providers to extend broadband access to unserved areas of the Commonwealth. Comcast committed to fund the remainder of the project and is planning to contribute more than $5.8 million to the project.

“In the world we live in today, it is nearly impossible to have economic prosperity and opportunity without broadband access,” said Delegate Kathy J. Byron (R-Bedford), Chairman of the Research and Development Committee of the Tobacco Commission. “Because of the commitment made by the Commission in extending this grant to Bedford County and Comcast, Smith Mountain Lake residents and businesses will — finally, have consistent, reliable broadband access.”

“We appreciate Comcast’s partnership and commitment to bringing high-speed Internet access to more residents and businesses in unserved, rural areas of Virginia, like Smith Mountain Lake,” said Edgar Tuck, District 2 Supervisor for Bedford County. “Through grants, such as the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission, we are able to work with partners to provide state-of-the-art, scalable technology to our residents.”

Comcast has invested billions of dollars in its Virginia network to meet consumer demand, providing among the fastest, most reliable Internet speeds over its fiber-rich network, and one of the fastest in-home Wi-Fi experiences. Comcast will also offer Internet Essentials, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program, providing low-cost broadband service, digital literacy training and discounted computers, the program has connected more than six million Americans since its inception in 2011.

“We are delighted to partner with Bedford County to bring our state-of-the-art products and services to more residents and businesses in Virginia and appreciate the opportunity to extend broadband services to unserved areas,” said Mary McLaughlin, Senior Vice President, Comcast’s Beltway Region.
