Wirtz man charged with drug possession

Brian Allen Smith

A traffic stop has led to the arrest of a Wirtz man.

On Jan. 1, a deputy from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was on patrol in Wirtz at about 9 p.m. when he stopped a 1999 Chevy S10 pickup truck for an equipment violation.

After using his canine partner to conduct a search of the vehicle, the deputy located a small plastic bag containing a white crystalline powder, digital scales and hypodermic needles.

Brian Allen Smith, 31, of Wirtz, was the front seat passenger in the vehicle and admitted to being the owner of the found drugs and paraphernalia. Smith was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance. He currently is being held in the Western Virginia Regional Jail without bond.
