Officer rescues woman

Dale Owens

Sgt. James Slaughter of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries commended a DGIF conservation police officer for his actions at Philpott Lake. According to Slaughter, Officer Dale Owens, who also patrols Smith Mountain Lake, had just towed a disabled boat from the main channel of Philpott Lake to the Philpott Marina when he observed a female subject reach toward a pontoon and fall into the water. Owen’s attempt to secure a personal flotation device around the woman was unsuccessful.

“She then told him that she couldn’t swim,” Slaughter said.
