James D. (Don) Matthews, age 90, of Columbia, Pa., formerly of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., died peacefully Sunday, September 9, 2012. Born in Connellsville, Pa., he was the son of the late Omer and Minnie Largent Matthews. Don and his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) J. Alden Matthews were married nearly 64 years. He was an auditor for CIT Financial Corporation, New York, and later for Fairchild Republic, New York. Don was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, serving and receiving the Purple Heart in the European Theater of Operations. He was a member of Trinity Ecumenical Parish, Moneta, Va. Don was a member of the VFW, Bedford, Va., and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed hunting, and had a special passion for fly-fishing and fishing from his boat on Smith Mountain Lake. In addition to his wife, Don is survived by his children, Barbara (William) Lyons of Ogden, Utah, Nancy Danning of Napa, Calif., Donna (Charles) Testa of Mastic, N.Y., Jim (Amy) of Naches, Wash.; his brother, C. Raymond (Ann) of Archbold, Ohio; his grandchildren, Chad (Anna) Testa, James (Lucy) Lyons, Diana Testa, Sean (Vinescia) Lyons, Debbi (Ben) Sombs, Ron (Lindsay Joe Mueller) Lyons, Ian Matthews, Tucker Matthews, and 6 great-grandchildren. A memorial service for Don was held at Trinity Ecumenical Parish, Moneta, Va., with interment in Trinity’s Memorial Garden.
