Alice Jean (Wishard) Rowan, age 83, of Bloomington, Indiana, formerly of Moneta, died Saturday at her residence. Born January 12, 1929 in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Frederick B. and Ruth (Clawson) Wishard. She taught special education students in the Watchung Borough Schools in Watchung, New Jersey for over 20 years. She did her undergraduate work at Purdue University and Newark State University and received her master’s degree from Montclair State University. Since moving to Bloomington in 2005, she had been a resident of Meadowood and loved being very active doing all things related to Indiana University, from attending women’s basketball games, to opera, ballets and Broadway shows. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Janice and Roger Christiansen of Latrobe, Pa., Henry and Nancy Rowan, of Buckingham, Pa. and Carol Rowan-Ozug and Frank Ozug, of Bloomington; seven grandchildren, Erik, Jeffrey and Rachel Christiansen, Katrin and John Rowan and Frank and Ruth Ozug; two great-grandchildren, Rowan and Shea Christiansen; two sisters, Martha Kurland (Norman), of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Mary McDougall, of South Hampton, Mass. and one sister-in-law, Hope Seibert, of Oxford, Mass. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Henry Ackley Rowan in 2003 and one sister, Florence Clair. A memorial service was held on Friday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. at the Meadowood Retirement Community in Bloomington. Burial was private in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
