I am grandmother. I have four wonderful, intelligent, and loving teenage grandchildren. I held each one as a newborn and vowed to love and protect them with all of my being. All of them came home to their parents Wednesday night, safely. I cannot imagine the grief and heartbreak of the grandmothers, grandfathers, and parents of those Florida teenagers and teachers who did not come home that night.
Our country is in trouble and each of us, as adults, has a responsibility to do something about it. I plan to contact as many public officials as I can and beg them to ban the automatic and semi-automatic rifles (like the AR-15 used Wednesday and at Sandy Hook in 2012). These are not hunting rifles; they are made for killing people. These should be rounded up and destroyed.
I realize that would not solve all of our problems, but it would be a start. Paul Ryan was wrong when he said, “This is one of those moments where we just need to step back and count our blessings.” When is the time for our government to act, if not now?
