Bedford County Department of Fire & Rescue units responded to a bicycle accident just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in the 8900 block of Peaks Road at 1:42 p.m. Tuesday.

A Park Ranger reported the accident after a group of bicyclists said a male subject approximately 50 years of age had wrecked causing his bike to go off the roadway and down a 10-foot embankment.  Other cyclists estimate he was traveling approximately 40 mph at the time of the accident.

The Park Ranger found the bicyclist unresponsive, inverted and pinned between two rocks and called for assistance.  Crews from Bedford Fire Department, Bedford Life Saving Crew and Bedford County responded.  The victim was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital by Lifeguard 10.

The victim was participating in a biking event and reportedly is from out-of-state.
